The challenge is working out the details... what size office pod will actually fit your garden? Will you need planning permission? How do you get reliable power and internet to the office? Will it be comfortable to use all year? These are the questions we hear a lot, and they’re exactly what this guide is here to answer! So, whether you’re in the early stages of your research or are ready to move forward, our guide will help you make informed decisions (and avoid common mistakes!)

Choosing the Right Size Pod for Your Garden

The ideal size office pod depends on how you intend to work in it, as well as the size and shape of your existing outdoor space. At Cabin Master, we offer both a set-sized studio range (providing budget-friendly office solutions) and our bespoke office pods, designed in 10cm increments to fit your requirements and space constraints perfectly.

Planning Permission & Regulations To Consider

Most office pods fall within permitted development, meaning you won’t usually need full planning permission. However, one of the key rules to be aware of is that outbuildings should not cover more than 50% of the total garden area, excluding the original footprint of the house. Height restrictions and positioning also play a role, particularly if the pod is close to a boundary (such as a fence). Of course, our garden room experts will be more than happy to discuss this with you should you have any further questions.

Smaller Pods

If you only require a smaller set up for solo working, smaller pods in the region of 3m by 2.5m are very well suited to a single desk setup and everyday laptop work.

Medium-Large Pods

If you require space for dual workstations, additional storage, or a more comfortable layout for video calls, increasing the size to around 4m by 3m or beyond can make a noticeable difference. Larger configurations can even accommodate informal meeting space or multi-purpose use (such as an office gym or office hobby room), which is worth considering if your needs may evolve.

A typical rule of thumb is that your office pod can be sized up to 30m² before planning permission is required, so very large home offices can easily be achieved.

Ultimately, choosing a size that allows for movement, light, and a clear layout will make the space far more effective in the long term.

Connectivity: Wi-Fi & Power Solutions

One of the most common (and important) questions we get when customers are planning their garden office pods is whether or not they'll be able to have reliable internet access and power. Of course, having reliable connectivity is vital when working from an office in the garden, and it comes down to how the installation is approached.

Power

We can design your garden pod with multiple sockets and lighting positioned where convenient for your work, with professional wiring installed by our certified electrical professionals.

As for running the power to your pod, the most dependable solution is to run an armoured cable from your house to the office. When installed by a qualified electrician, this provides a safe and reliable supply capable of supporting your lighting, heating, and your computer or laptop setup.

Internet Connection

As for your internet connection, there are two main approaches:

A hardwired Ethernet connection

A hardwired ethernet connection provides the most stable and consistent performance, making it the best option for tasks such as video calls, cloud-based work, and large file transfers. Where possible, this can be run directly from your house using an external-grade cable, ensuring a reliable, long-term connection with minimal risk of interference.

Wi-Fi Extenders

Alternatively, wireless solutions such as Wi-Fi extenders or mesh systems can be used to bring connectivity into a garden office. Of these, mesh Wi-Fi systems generally provide more consistent coverage than traditional extenders, as they create a stronger network across multiple access points. Standard extenders can work for lighter usage, but they may reduce speeds and performance.

Heating & Cooling Your Office for Year-Round Use

Something you may be wondering when researching offices in the garden is how it will perform throughout the year in different seasons. A common concern is that garden offices get cold in the winter, making them uncomfortable or even unusable.

Insulation

A well-designed home office building will feel just as comfortable in the middle of winter as it does during the height of summer...but of course, this is providing it has proper insulation.

At Cabin Master, along with our use of Scandinavian redwood timber (a timber which provides great natural insulation), we build our pods with high-quality insulation in the walls, floor and roof. This means your home office will maintain a stable internal temperature, allowing you to work from home comfortably throughout the entire year.

Climate Control

We also offer an optional upgrade: air source climate control. You can choose to heat or cool your workspace as you please, creating your ideal environment for work at all times.
