Sim racing is exploding in popularity, used by everyone from gamers and F1 fans to motorsport enthusiasts and professional drivers. If you're thinking about creating your own driving simulator set up at home, you'll definitely want to consider doing it properly and investing in a dedicated sim driving space. Let's discuss all things driving sim rooms and how to achieve your dream home racing space!

Why Are Driving Simulators So Popular?

Over the last few years, sim racing has gone from being a niche hobby into one of the fastest-growing forms of gaming and motorsport entertainment. Advances in modern technology mean today's racing simulators offer an incredibly realistic driving experience, which is enticing everyone from casual gamers looking to level-up their set up and Formula One fans to aspiring racing drivers and motorsport professionals alike.

Immersion

One of the biggest attractions is immersion. Modern direct drive steering wheels, load cell pedals, ultra-wide or triple-screen monitor setups and virtual reality headsets allow drivers to experience every corner, bump and braking zone in remarkable detail. The closer a simulator feels to a real racing car, the more rewarding the experience becomes!

Driving Skills

Of course, driving sims help you to develop your driving skills. Enthusiasts can spend countless hours behind the (virtual) wheel learning racing lines, improving braking techniques, and practising consistency. In fact, many professional racing drivers themselves actually use simulators to learn unfamiliar circuits, prepare for race weekends and keep their skills sharp between events.

Entertainment

For many people, driving sims simply offer a great way to spend their free time - either enjoying them by themselves, or for entertaining family and friends. A simulator can provide hours of entertainment without leaving home, whether you're racing friends online, introducing your children to motorsport or enjoying a few laps on your own after work.

Why a Garden Room Makes the Perfect Driving Simulator Room

Once you've invested in a quality simulator, finding the right place to install it becomes just as important as choosing the equipment itself. Many people begin in a spare bedroom, garage or dining room, but these spaces often come with compromises. Your equipment will likely need moving regularly, the cables become untidy, temperatures fluctuate and the room usually serves several purposes rather than feeling like a real immersive sim space.

Practical To Use All Of The Time

A bespoke Cabin Master driving sim garden room solves all of these problems.
Instead of fitting your simulator around your home, you create a purpose-built space designed specifically around the way you want to race. Your cockpit remains permanently assembled, your monitors stay perfectly positioned and your wheel never needs recalibrating before each session.
Because every Cabin Master garden room is fully insulated for year-round use, you'll enjoy a comfortable environment whatever the weather. Unlike a cold garage or damp shed, the stable internal temperature helps protect valuable electronics while creating a pleasant place to spend hours behind the wheel.

Custom Sim Space

With our bespoke design process, it allows you to truly create a custom driving sim room, giving you the freedom to position your windows, doors, sockets, lighting and internet connections exactly where they're needed. Whether you're planning a small personal racing room or a large entertainment space with spectator seating, your outdoor build can be tailored to suit your exact requirements.

Design Ideas For Your Dream Simulator Room

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a bespoke garden room is that you can design every aspect around your driving simulator, rather than trying to make your equipment fit an existing space.

Dimensions

Start by thinking about your simulator itself. Will you be using a compact racing cockpit with a single monitor, or are you planning a more immersive setup with triple screens, an ultra-wide display or even a motion platform? The size and layout of your equipment will influence the dimensions of the room, as well as the positioning of doors, windows and electrical points. At Cabin Master, we design our driving sim rooms in precise 100mm increments, so customers can build the ideal space.

Lighting

Lighting is another important consideration. Too much direct sunlight can create glare on your screens, while a darker room provides a more immersive racing experience. During the design stage, we can help position glazing to maximise natural light without compromising your setup. As for your ambient lighting inside, RGB LED strips behind monitors, under shelving or around the ceiling create a more immersive atmosphere, while dimmable lighting helps reduce glare during evening races.

Motorsport-inspired décor

When kitting out your driving sim room, don't forget to add those all-important decor additions! Think display signed memorabilia, framed circuit maps, race suits or helmets or die-cast models to give the room a real paddock feel.

Feature Wall

There are several options for creating a great feature wall. For example, you can opt for one wall to be painted darker, or have slatted acoustic wall panels on the wall behind your simulator to create a sleek focal point. In our driving sim room at our Nottingham show site, we have covered a full wall behind our simulator with a large race track graphic, creating the illusion of being at the race track. It's a fun way to decorate the entire room!

What Size Garden Room Do You Need for a Racing Sim?

The ideal size of your garden building depends on your simulator set up and how you intend to use the space. However, as a general guide, a compact cockpit with a single monitor naturally requires less space than a triple-screen simulator or full motion racing rig. You'll also need enough room to move comfortably around your equipment and allow easy access for maintenance and cleaning.

For example:

Set Up Recommended minimum room size
Wheel stand & single monitor 2.5m x 2.5m
Fixed cockpit & single monitor 3m x 3m
Triple monitors 4m x 3m
Motion simulator 5m x 3m+

These are intended as comfortable minimum sizes rather than strict requirements. Additional space may be needed if you'd like seating for spectators, a desk for streaming, storage or room to upgrade your simulator in the future.

During your design consultation, we'll discuss how you intend to use the room and recommend dimensions that provide enough space to race comfortably while leaving room to move around your equipment. Because every bespoke Cabin Master garden room is manufactured in precise 100mm increments, you're never restricted to standard building sizes. We'll help you choose dimensions that suit both your current simulator and any future upgrades you may have planned.
