Creating a bespoke, multi-functional garden room

1. The vision for a custom garden room

Many of our customers come to us with some ideas in mind. This could be as simple as the purpose for their room - such as a contemporary garden office or luxury summer house - or lots of details such as the size of the windows, internal designs or specific requirements.

Geoff and Mona had originally planned to create a bungalow in their garden, but for various reasons, this didn’t work out. As they discovered garden rooms, they realised that this would work perfectly for their family.

Before their initial consultation, they knew that they wanted a multi-use space: “We wanted a multi-functional space which we didn’t have to pack away.” This came with a variety of design challenges to ensure this 7.5m x 4m space would fit the bill.

Geoff explains more about his and Mona’s vision:

“Everyone’s got a living room, a dining room… Whilst they can double up for other functions, they have to return back to whatever that room is used for at the end of the day. So we wanted a space where we can set up different areas or zones of working.”

2. The consultation and design

Geoff and Mona visited our show site in Nottingham and explored the various garden rooms we have on display. The showrooms are designed to get your imagination going, and help you to understand your options and what a bespoke garden room could look like.

“Having gone round the showroom, which had quite a number of examples, we were able to see what it was my wife and I envisaged we wanted on the plot.”

Geoff and Mona then had a consultation with one of our experts at Cabin Master. We talked to them about what they required from the room, as well as the design elements they wanted to see and the space in which the room would be situated.

“The staff were just fantastic. From the design idea of this cabin and what we wanted - the decking and everything else, where it was going to be situated and the finish - they produced the lot.”

3. The final garden room

With the designs signed off, we constructed and built the Russell family’s bespoke garden room.

Geoff and Mona love the final product and explain how it’s become a unique, multi-functional space for their family:

“We have an exercise area or a gaming area for our children. They come up here, they do yoga, they use weights, they workout. It’s also a great space for your work, modelling or whatever else.

You have an opportunity in the space to create something new around it. We have working areas. We have a socialising area. I also have electric guitars and, once a week, a mate of mine comes around. We clear this area and put the amplifiers in. And because it’s away from the house, we’re able to turn it up to eleven.”

It’s not just the room itself that the family loves. The fact that this space is in their garden, a short walk from the house, provides a tranquil and removed area that creates a fresh perspective.

“The whole journey of having to walk to it… it feels like you’re leaving the house and you’re going somewhere else. It just looks fantastic.”

Thank you to the Russell family for sharing their experience of creating a multi-use garden room with Cabin Master, and letting us get a peek into their space.

This is the transcription of Geoff’s experience with Cabin Master and his luxury garden room. Minor amendments have been made for clarity.

Our thinking in terms of the design - or my wife’s thinking in terms of the design - was that she wanted to keep it in keeping with the garden, slightly secluded, shaded, greenery, and the woodland setting.

Originally we were looking to build a smaller bungalow at the bottom of the garden on this plot. We wanted to develop the garden, add extra rooms, create an amazing garden space, but that never materialised.

We already had taken the time clearing it. The next logical step was ‘what do we do with it?’ We’ve already created a plot that we’ve got to maintain, the land’s now been cleared. Why don’t we look at a garden room?

We were driving past Cabin Master and my wife said, ‘well, we’ve been thinking about buying a garden room.’ And, literally, we just went in.

And we didn’t go anywhere else after that.

We went in. We met the team. And having gone round the showroom, which had quite a number of examples, we were able to see what it was my wife and I envisaged we wanted on the plot.

The staff were just fantastic. From the design idea of this cabin and what we wanted - the decking and everything else and where it was going to be situated and the finish - they produced the lot.

The intended use of the cabin was to be a multifunctional space in the house. Obviously everyone’s got a living room, got a kitchen, dining room… Whilst they can double up for other things or other functions, they have to return back to whatever that room is used for at the end of the day.

So we wanted a space which isn’t a living room, isn’t a dining room etcetera, where we can set up different areas or zones of working.

So we have an exercise area or a gaming area for our girls or my boys. They come up here, they do yoga, they use weights, they workout. It’s also a great space for your work, modelling or whatever else.

You have an opportunity in the space to create something new around it and look at it. We have working areas. We have a socialising, or comms, area if you're working. I also have electric guitars and once a week a mate of mine comes around and we clear this area and put the amplifiers in. And because it’s away from the house, we’re able to turn it up to eleven.

That was the purpose really. We wanted a multi-functional space which we didn’t have to pack away.

When we’re in the house looking out - as invariably you are because it is a garden room - it is great to see it in a way that beautifies the product in itself. It brings with it a degree of tranquillity. The whole journey of having to walk to it to come up here, it feels like you’re leaving the house and you’re going somewhere else. It’s just good to have a separate space sometimes.

It just looks fantastic.

Thank you to Geoff and Mona Russell for talking to us about their garden room.
