Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need planning permission for a small garden room?

If your small garden office is under 20m2, then you will not require planning permission under UK law. Cabin Masters garden buildings are also built on foundations that meet UK building regulation standards, so you can order your new micro garden office without worrying about seeking planning permission.

How small can a garden office be?

Cabin Master small garden offices can start at 2m x 2m, with this size being extremely popular amongst those that work from a micro office at home, as it is big enough to fit all necessary equipment in without taking up unnecessary space in the garden.

What are small office sheds?

Some people may refer to small garden offices as small office sheds or micro offices. Small office sheds are essentially wooden garden structures built for working from home or running a business from your outdoor area. You can make it work with a small office shed.

Do I need planning permission for a garden room with a toilet?

You can add a toilet to your garden room without the need to seek additional permission, as this is still part of your permitted development rights within the UK. This includes installation of any plumbing required to add a toilet to your garden room, provided the room itself is no taller than 2.5 metres.

What is the minimum size for a garden office?

Your micro garden office could be as small as 2m x 2m (6.56168 ft x 6.56168 ft), and this will generally provide you with enough space to include a desk, chair, and simple storage solution.

Do I have to pay council tax on a garden room?

When you think about adding a garden pod, the question of council tax inevitably arises. Do you need to pay it, or can you enjoy your new space without worrying about extra costs? The answer isn’t straightforward and depends on how you plan to use the room.

Key takeaways:

– Using a garden room for personal leisure typically does not affect council tax.

– Garden rooms used as independent living spaces may incur a separate council tax band.

– Using a garden room as a home office might qualify for specific tax exemptions.

– Temporary garden structures generally do not alter the property’s council tax status.

– Consult your local council to verify the tax implications based on your garden room’s use and structure.
