Geoff & Mona's Multifunctional Outdoor Space

Geoff and Mona wanted to make the most of an unused area at the bottom of their Nottingham garden - a peaceful, tree-lined plot that deserved more than to be left empty. Instead of the original plan to build a bungalow, they chose a 7.5m x 4m Cabin Master garden room, finished in a smart hybrid of Cedar and Marley cladding to complement the woodland setting. Now, it’s a flexible space for work, exercise, music and downtime, designed to be used and enjoyed by the whole family, all year round.

How do you use your new outdoor space?

"The intended use of the cabin was to be a multifunctional space. In the house, obviously, everyone's got a living room, a kitchen, dining room. And whilst they double up for other things, they have to return back to whatever that room is usually at the end of the day. So, we wanted a space that isn’t the living room or the dining room — where we could set up different areas or zones of working.

We have an exercise area or gaming area. The girls — or my boy — they come up here, they do yoga, they use weights, they work out.
It’s also a great space for VR work, modelling or whatever else. You have an opportunity in the space to create something, move around it, look at it.
I have a working area, a socialising or conference area. I also have electric guitars. Once a week a mate of mine comes around and we literally clear this area, we put the amplifiers in — and because it’s away from the house, we’re able to turn it up to 11.

So that was really the purpose — we wanted a multifunctional space which we didn’t have to pack away."

Garden Room Design Service

When it came to the design, Geoff credits his wife Mona with the creative vision:

“I was thinking in terms of the design - well, particularly my wife's thinking about the design - she wanted to keep it in keeping with the garden. Slightly secluded, shaded, greenery, in keeping with the woodland setting.”

With that brief in mind, our expert design team worked closely with the couple to bring their vision to life. From choosing a hybrid Cedar and Marley cladding that complemented the garden’s mature trees, to orienting the building in a quiet, tucked-away spot at the bottom of the plot, every decision was made to ensure the garden room felt like a natural extension of the landscape.

How does it feel to use your woodland-themed garden room?

"When we're in the house looking out, because it is a garden room, it is great to see it lit up in a way that beautifies the product in itself. It brings with it a degree of tranquility I think. When coming into our garden room, it feels like you're leaving the house and you're going somewhere else. It's just good to have separate space and time. It just looks fantastic."

How did you come to choose a Cabin Master garden room?

"We were driving literally past the Cabin Master Nottingham show site and my wife said, well we've been thinking about buying a garden room, and literally we just went in. We didn't go anywhere else after that. We went in, we met the team and having gone around the showroom which had quite a number of examples on display, we were able to see what it was that my wife and I envisaged and wanted on the plot really. And the staff were just fantastic!"
